CONCORD, Mass. – The Slack Brook Section 14 Emergency Riverbank Erosion Protection project in Leominster, Mass., will be completed under the terms of a $372,316.00 contract recently awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

Work will be accomplished by Gordon Contracting, Inc., of Sangerville, Maine. Construction is scheduled to start in November 2015 and take about six months to complete. The contract was awarded on Sept. 29, 2015.

“The project consists of preventing further erosion and potential road washout along Exchange Street in Leominster,” said Project Manager Robert Russo, of the Corps’ New England District, Engineering and Planning Division in Concord, Mass.

The area of concern is along the southern bank of Slack Brook, between Colonial and Kingman Drive. The project will be built on privately-owned land. Permanent easements are being procured for these properties. Construction will require the placement of about 2,000 cubic yards of material.

The project will be constructed along the southern bank of Slack Brook, extending 320 feet from the downstream end of an existing dam. The materials proposed for the project include outer stone protection overlaying layers of small stone and gravel filters. Upper bank areas not protected by the stone will be stabilized using a combination of geocell and Erosion Control Blanket (ECB) technologies, as well as strategic plantings.

The project will be managed by the Corps of Engineers under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.
