Corps of Engineers awards contract for electrical upgrades at Westville Lake dam in Southbridge

CONCORD, Mass. Electrical upgrades to the Westville Lake dam in Southbridge, Massachusetts, will be completed under the terms of a $165,250.00 contract recently awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

 

Work will be accomplished by Colony Construction of Newburyport, Massachusetts. Once a notice to proceed is issued construction will be authorized to start. The contract was awarded on Sept. 28, 2018.

 

The work consists of: demolishing the existing electrical distribution equipment to include service entrance disconnect switch and double throw fused disconnect switches, wire way and four power panels and associated feeder conductors; providing new meter socket and equipment for same as required by the utility company; and providing three new power panels and feeder conductors for same. Feeder conductors for gate tower will be pulled in existing ductbank along the crest of the dam.

 

The existing branch circuit wiring will remain and new wiring will be provided from the first device in each circuit back to the new power panels. Work includes providing new conductors to feed the gate controls located in the gate tower gallery via existing conduits embedded in concrete; providing new wire way; and providing new conductors from the existing generator to a new double throw disconnect switch.

 

The project will be managed by the Corps of Engineers and all work will be accomplished under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.

 

Westville Lake dam in Southbridge and Sturbridge is 560 feet long and 78 feet high and cost $5.7 million to construct. Its lake can store an 11,100 acre-foot reservoir, which amounts to 3.6 billion gallons of water. It has prevented damages totaling $53.7 million since placed in operation in 1962. The reservoir area offers recreational opportunities, including picnicking, fishing, hunting, canoeing, boating, and nature study and annually attracts more than 55,000 visitors.
