Corps awards contract to construct solar energy projects at Hop Brook Lake, Naugatuck River Office

CONCORD, Mass. – Construction of solar energy projects at Hop Brook Lake and the Naugatuck River Basin Office in Middlebury, Conn., will be completed under the terms of a $132,624.68 contract recently issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

 

Work will be accomplished by Jody Builders Corp. of Danbury, Conn. Construction is scheduled to take about 3 months to complete and start within 14 days of the issuance of the notice to proceed by the Corps of Engineers. The contract was awarded on Sept. 28, 2017.

 

Work will include design and installation of a solar photovoltaic electric generating system in two different locations: at Hop Brook Lake and at the Naugatuck River Basin Office. The first array, located at the Naugatuck River Basin Office, will be capable of producing approximately 9,600 kWh annually and will be installed on the roof of the metal storage building at the Naugatuck River Basin Office.

 

The second array, located at the Hop Brook Lake Project Office, will be capable of producing 32,000 kWh annually, and will be installed on three roofs at the Hop Brook Lake Project Office. The project will be managed by the Corps of Engineers and all work will be accomplished under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.

 

Hop Brook Lake dam, situated on the brook of the same name in the towns of Middlebury, Waterbury and Naugatuck was completed in December 1968 at a cost of $6.2 million. The 520-foot-long, 97-foot-high embankment can hold back 2.2 billion gallons of water in a 270-acre pool extending 1.5 miles. Hop Brook Lake has prevented damages amounting to $108.4 million. The year-round, 21-acre conservation pool annually attracts nearly 200,000 visitors who enjoy a variety of recreational pursuits on 536 acres including picnicking, swimming, hiking, fishing, and special permit group events.
