Published Oct. 10, 2017

CONCORD, Mass. Inlet weir scour repair to the Buffumville Lake dam in Charlton, Mass., will be completed under the terms of a $99,669.00 contract recently awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,  New England District.

Work will be accomplished by Ironclad Services, Inc. of Springfield, Mass. The contract was awarded on Sept. 18, 2017. Once a notice to proceed is issued by the Corps of Engineers, construction will be authorized to start. Construction is scheduled to occur over a six-month period starting in the spring of 2018.

This project includes the concrete repair to the weir box slab and walls and the installation of the sacrificial splash pad to reduce future deterioration. The lower portion of the emergency gate slots will be sand-blasted and repainted and an existing ladder will be removed and replaced.

The repair project will be managed by the Corps of Engineers and all work will be accomplished under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.

Buffumville Lake dam on the Little River in Charlton was completed in 1958 at a cost of $3 million. Buffumville Dam has prevented more than $133.7 million in cumulative damages, through February 2017. Picnicking, swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, a 27-hole disc golf course, volleyball, horseshoes, two rental shelters and sight-seeing are just some of the activities visitors can enjoy at Buffumville Lake. Portions of Buffumville Park are handicap accessible.
