Corps of Engineers awards $10.5 million contract for Nantucket Harbor east, west jetty repair in Nantucket

Published Sept. 22, 2015

CONCORD, Mass. The Nantucket Harbor east and west jetties in Nantucket, Mass. will be repaired under the terms of a $10,545,000.00 contract issued recently by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District. Work will be accomplished by Mohawk Northeast, Inc., of Plantsville, Conn. Construction is scheduled to start on or about Dec. 1, 2015 and take about 10 – 12 months to complete. The contract was awarded on Sept. 16, 2015.

Nantucket Harbor is located on the western side of Nantucket Island in Nantucket Sound, about 25 miles southeast of Hyannis, Mass., and 22 miles east of Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard. Work consists of repairing both the east and west jetties at the entrance of Nantucket Harbor, which were damaged during Hurricane Sandy. The east and west jetties extend into Nantucket Sound approximately 5,360 feet and 4,200 feet respectively, and provide protection to vessels transiting into Nantucket Harbor.

The existing jetties consist primarily of 2-4 ton armor stone. The first few hundred feet of each jetty was built as a full-tide structure while the significant remaining portion was authorized as half-tide only structures, exposed only during mid- to low-tide. Most of the repair areas will be completed in the half tide sections of each jetty. Due to the location of repairs and width of crest on each jetty the contractor will be required to work from a marine plant only as no land access is available.

“Specific work tasks are intended to reconstruct severely deteriorated areas of the east and west jetties to authorized dimensions,” said Project Manager Craig Martin, of the Corps’ New England District, Programs/Project Management Division in Concord, Mass. “These tasks include delivery and installation of approximately 32,300 tons of 2-4 ton armor stone to repair the jetties.” New stone will replace displaced armor stone to fill in existing gaps. Repairs will require substantial moving and re-handling of existing stones to obtain the required interlocking placement and construction tolerances. Completed repairs will provide a crest width of 4 feet (west jetty) and 6 feet (east jetty) for the entire length of each structure.

The Corps will manage the project and a Quality Assurance Representative will assure compliance with contract requirements. For more information visit the website at:
