CONCORD, Mass. – Rehabilitation of tainter gate machinery at the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier in Providence, Rhode Island, will be conducted under the terms of a $238,586.00 contract recently issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

Work will be accomplished by Chas G. Allen, Inc., of Barre, Mass. Work consists of the refurbishment of the tainter gate lifting machinery at the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier. Additionally, couplings are to be added to the horizontal torque shafts to allow for differential settlement of the barrier. The contract was awarded on Sept. 24, 2015. A notice to proceed was issued on Nov. 5, 2015 authorizing construction to start.

The work of this project involves the refurbishment of the three gate motors. Specifically, this consists of disassembly of the six gearboxes with the contractor performing maintenance functions such as inspecting, cleaning, and testing the brake units for the torque shafts. Additionally, coupling joints will be installed in the torque shafts, with the contractor furnishing and installing six new industrial shafts.

The project will be managed by the Corps of Engineers and all work will be accomplished under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.
