Nashawannuck Pond Ecosystem Restoration

Nashawannuck Pond is a shallow impoundment located in Easthampton, Mass. The pond suffers from excessive sedimentation and rooted aquatic plant growth, reducing water depth and open water habitat. The Corps prepared an Environmental Assessment which recommended dredging the pond to restore open water habitat.

In 2009 the Corps, together with the city of Easthampton, drained the pond and contracted excavation of over 40,000 cubic yards of soft sediment from the upper portion of the pond. The Corps and several volunteers encourage fish to move downstream during the draining and physically moved those that remained. The excavated sediment was placed on city owned property not far from the pond. The pond was refilled during the spring of 2010.
