River Basins in New England

Flooding is caused by a combination of many factors related to the underlying river basins. Corps' flood damage reduction projects, such as dams and local protection projects, are designed and constructed as part of an overall plan to limit flooding in a particular river basin.

There are 19 principal river basins that lie entirely or partially in New England.

Five river basins lie in parts of Connecticut to include the Connecticut, Housatonic, Thames, Pawcatuck and Hudson. All except the Hudson River Basin have Corps' flood risk management projects within their drainage areas.

Eight river basins lie in Maine to include the Saint John, Penobscot, Saint Croix, Kennebec, Androscoggin, Presumpscot, Saco and Piscataqua. Three of these basins, the Saint John, Penobscot and Kennebec, have Corps' flood risk management projects within their drainage areas.

Nine river basins lie in Massachusetts to include the Connecticut, Housatonic, Thames, Merrimack, Blackstone, Charles, Neponset, Hudson and Taunton. Eight of these basins (Taunton being the exception) have Corps' flood risk management projects within their drainage areas.

Five river basins lie in New Hampshire to include the Connecticut, Merrimack, Androscoggin, Saco and Piscataqua. Three of these basins (the Connecticut, Merrimack and Piscataqua) have Corps' flood risk management projects within their drainage areas.

Three river basins lie in parts of Rhode Island to include the Blackstone, Thames and Pawcatuck. All three river basins have Corps' flood risk management projects within their drainage areas.

Three river basins lie in parts of Vermont to include the Connecticut, Hudson and Lake Champlain (which is part of the St. Lawrence River System). All three basins have Corps' flood risk management projects within their drainage areas. Projects in the Connecticut River Basin were constructed by the New England District, while projects in the Hudson River and Lake Champlain Basins were constructed by the New York District.
