Hampton Harbor Navigation Project

Hampton Harbor

Hampton Harbor in Hampton is situated behind Seabrook Beach and Hampton Beach, about 1.5 miles north of the New Hampshire-Massachusetts state line. The entrance to Hampton Harbor separates Seabrook and Hampton beaches and forms the mouth of the Hampton River. A small lobstering fleet, charter fishing boats, and numerous recreational craft are based in the harbor.

The project, completed in 1965, involved:

  • Constructing a 0.7-mile-long channel, eight feet deep and 150 feet wide, extending from the ocean through the entrance to the harbor. Material dredged from the channel was placed at the northern end of Hampton Beach in conjunction with the federal beach replenishment project.
  • Extending and raising existing state-built stone jetties on each side of the entrance to the harbor. The existing 1,300-foot-long north jetty was extended another 1,100 feet, and the outer 300 feet of the existing 1,000-foot-long south jetty was raised. A walking surface was constructed on the top of the north jetty extension for fishing.

Work at Hampton Harbor was constructed as a small project under Section 107 of the Continuing Authorities Program.
