Corps awards $438,000 contract for repairs to gate guide, fender timbers of the New Bedford Hurricane Barrier

CONCORD, Mass. – Repairs to the gate guide and fender timbers at the New Bedford-Fairhaven Hurricane Barrier in New Bedford and Fairhaven, Mass., will be completed under the terms of a $438,000.00 contract recently awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

Work will be accomplished by Kovilic Construction Company, Inc., of Franklin Park, Ill. Construction is scheduled to be completed in October 2014. The contract was awarded on April 18, 2014.

The work on this project consists of repairs to the gate guide and fender timbers of the New Bedford Hurricane Barrier. The work consists of repairs to the steel Guide G-6 and replacement of fender timbers at the hurricane barrier.

Work tasks include removal of damaged steel gate guide components, removal of damaged fender timbers, fabrication of new steel gate guide members with off-site shop painting, installation of new gate guide components and fender timbers, and successful demonstration of the adequacy of the new work by inserting a de-watering stop gate in slots between gate guides.

The project will be managed by the Corps under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.
