Winhall Brook Camping Area to remain closed during 2024 recreation season due to major rehab work

Published Nov. 1, 2023

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District announced today that the Winhall Brook Camping Area located within the reservoir lands at Ball Mountain Lake in Jamaica, Vermont, will not be open for any period during the 2024 recreation season.

USACE officials announced that major flood rehabilitation work due to flooding earlier this year, combined with several planned upgrades and standard off-season operational repairs, will keep the camping area closed to campers during the 2024 season.

Major flood rehabilitation work that must be completed includes removing deposited silt from the campsites, cleaning up driftwood and debris from recreation areas, repairing and relocating affected lean-to shelters, streambank restoration of the Winhall River, rehabilitation of the damaged West River Trail, and replanting trees lost to flood waters.

Improvement projects planned for Winhall Brook Camping Area during this closure period include widening the road approach to Slason Bridge to provide more area for increased maneuverability for larger recreation vehicles, upgrading sites from 30 Amp to 50 Amp electrical service, and repairing and renovating all restrooms with new plumbing fixtures, utility systems and structural improvements.

Winhall Brook Camping Area is nestled in the Green Mountains of Vermont along the Winhall River and the West River, about seven miles north of Ball Mountain Lake off Route 100. The camping area is normally open for camping the third Friday in May through Columbus Day each year. Camping reservations can be made online at Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777.
