Concord, Mass. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District announced today that contractors will begin concrete repair work beginning July 17, 2023, on the exterior walls of the Sagamore Bridge south abutment.
USACE officials emphasize that this work on the south abutment will NOT result in any lane restrictions for vehicles traveling over the Sagamore Bridge.
The concrete repairs will be performed at night to minimize traffic impacts on Sandwich Road where the road goes through the abutment. The work includes removal and replacement of deteriorated and spalling concrete on the east and west sides of the abutment, as well as the underside.
Workers will install temporary traffic control cones and signage nightly prior to start of work. Police details will be onsite to help with traffic management on Sandwich Road. Some of the work zones will require the cones to be setup to allow for only alternating one-way traffic to pass with the police detail directing traffic.
The existing sidewalk in the vicinity of the abutment will remain open during work on some repair areas but will need to be closed during work on areas directly above the walkway. When the sidewalk is closed, pedestrians must wait to be safely escorted through the work zone by the police detail.
Work is scheduled to occur Sunday through Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and is expected to last approximately six weeks.
