Concord, Mass. -- The Sagamore Bridge work that was scheduled to start March 13 will now start a week later. Beginning March 20, vehicle travel over the bridge spanning the Cape Cod Canal will be reduced from the current two lanes in each direction to a single 12-foot-wide lane in each direction as roadway and bridge structural repairs are conducted. Lane restrictions will be in place 24 hours a day until the project is completed, and police details will be on site when work is being performed to assist with traffic.
Motorists planning to use the Sagamore Bridge should be aware that travel delays are likely to occur during the morning and afternoon peak travel periods each day. Traffic signs and message boards will be used to help inform motorists about lane restrictions and bridge work. The bridge sidewalk will be closed during the phase of repair work adjacent to the sidewalk side of the bridge. The sidewalk will remain open during other phases of repair work. Signs will be posted, and public notices will be sent out to alert pedestrians and bicyclists when the sidewalk is closed.
Repair work and lane restrictions are scheduled to run into May, but USACE officials plan to have all bridge work and lane restrictions finished prior to the start of Memorial Day weekend.
The maintenance work start date and end date are weather dependent.
