Construction activities near Sandwich Marina will affect public access to Canal’s south service road and Sandwich Recreation Area in April and early May

Published April 19, 2018

CONCORD, Mass. – Construction activities in the vicinity of the Sandwich Marina along the Cape Cod Canal in Sandwich, Mass., will periodically affect public access to the Canal’s south service road and the Sandwich Recreation Area in April and early May 2018.

The offloading of large pieces of equipment and materials from barges requires heavy haul trailers to cross the service road near the bulkhead on the western side of the marina. To ensure the safety of the visiting public, access will be controlled during work activity and delivery vehicle movements.

Work to prepare the area for delivery has already begun. Barge deliveries will occur between 6 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on selected dates. The first of six deliveries at the Sandwich Recreation Area is tentatively scheduled for Monday, April 23, 2018.

The service road can be accessed by pedestrians and bicyclists during this period via the multi-use path that runs from the Sandwich Harbor Master Office to the Canal Service Road at the Sandwich comfort station.

Service Road access path delays of up to 30 minutes may be experienced during delivery or site preparation operations. Both the Service Road access path and the Sandwich Recreation Area parking lot will be re-opened to the public when work activity is completed each day and will remain open while there are no delivery or site preparation operations.
