CONCORD, Mass. – The Block Island Wharf project located along the east side of the Block Island Harbor in Block Island, Rhode Island., will be repaired under the terms of an $117,000.00 contract issued recently by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

Work will be accomplished by Douglas P. Fleming, LLC, of Windham, Conn. Construction of the project is scheduled to start on or about Oct. 1, 2013 and take about three months to complete. The contract was awarded on June 21, 2013.

“The work on this project involves repairing a wharf damaged by the storm surge from Hurricane Sandy,” said Project Manager Mike Walsh, of the Corps’ New England District, Programs/Project Management Division in Concord, Mass. “The wharf is located on the eastern side of the inner basin of old harbor on Block Island, Rhode Island, and is in front of Ballard’s Inn.”

Numerous inboard pile caps have become elevated above the tops of the inboard timber piles. The work involves removing some of the deck planks and timber wheel guards in order to provide access to the pile caps. Sand and rip rap will need to be excavated or moved around each of the inboard piles in order to provide the room necessary to reseat the pile caps on top of the piles. 

The project will be managed by the Corps and all work will be accomplished under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.
