The Essex River in Essex is located about five miles west of Cape Ann and flows into Essex Bay. Several boat yards that accommodate small recreational craft are located near the head of the river in Essex.

The project consists of a channel four feet deep and 60 feet wide extending from Essex Bay to the Route 133 Bridge in Essex. It was completed in 1901.
