Mechanical repairs to Vertical Lift Railroad Bridge completed at the Cape Cod Canal in Buzzards Bay

Published July 29, 2014

CONCORD, Mass. Mechanical repairs to the Cape Cod Canal Vertical Lift Railroad Bridge in Buzzards Bay, Mass., were recently completed by a local contractor, according to officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

Work was completed in April 2014 by contractor R. Zoppo Corporation, of Stoughton, Mass., on the $289,000 project.

The work consisted of performing vibration tests on 80 main counterweight ropes (40 ropes per main counterweight) and adjusting tension to acceptable tolerances in each main counterweight rope. It also involved performing strain gauge testing to determine span balance at each corner of the lift span and adjusting span balance to achieve required balance conditions.

Work also required adjusting two transverse rollers (one upper and one lower) on the West Truss at the north end of the lift span at the North Tower and replacing deteriorated support steel of the operator’s elevator at the South Tower.

The project was managed by the Corps of Engineers under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.
