Description

The wood frog is 1.375-2-.75 inches long. It has a dark “mask” that goes around the eyes. The mask is variable in coloration. The wood frog is brown.

Voice

Sounds like a horse, quacking duck.

Breeding

Wood frogs are called explosive breeders. Once they come out of hibernation, they have a very short period of time for breeding, only a couple of days or up to a week.

Habitat

Near moist, wooded areas, but will wander great distances from water.

Diet

Insects and invertebrates.

Range

The Smoky Mountains in North Carolina up to Maine and much of Canada, westward to Minnesota.

Other Useful Information

Wood frogs are the only frogs above the artic circle. The have adapted to cold, harsh weather. In winter, they hibernate and can have up to 45% of their body freeze solid. During this time, the wood frog’s blood circulation, breathing, and heart beat stop completely.
