NRM Program - Herptiles

photo of garter snakeSurveys to find the amphibian and reptile species using our lands were started in 2003. The surveys began in the early spring with calling surveys. These are used to determine which frog species are breeding in the area. The male frogs call to attract a mate in the same way male birds sing to attract a female. As the season progresses, different species can be heard calling. Wood frogs start in the early spring and are followed closely by spring peepers. Northern leopard frogs, pickerel frogs, gray tree frogs, green frogs, and bullfrogs call later in the year.
