Description

This is a reddish-brown bird on top and white underneath. They have gray flanks, a grayish face, and gray eyerings (which are both incomplete and indefinite). The veery is a little smaller than a robin.

Voice

The song is a series of veer notes. The veery’s call is a sharp descending, whistled veer.

Habitat

The veery can be found in dense, moist woodlands and along streamsides.

Diet

Veerys feed mainly on insects and fruit.

Range

This is a northern species of bird; veerys can be found in all the Northern states. They are also found down throughout the Appalachian Mountains.

Other Useful Information

This is a night migrating bird. They are very secretive. Flocks are able to stay together in the dark by using a series of “contact calls” that allow them to identify were the fellow members are located.

Other thrushes (i.e. wood, gray-cheecked, Bicknell’s, Swainson’s, and hermit thrush).
