This is a reddish-brown bird on top and white underneath. They have gray flanks, a grayish face, and gray eyerings (which are both incomplete and indefinite). The veery is a little smaller than a robin.
The song is a series of veer notes. The veery’s call is a sharp descending, whistled veer.
The veery can be found in dense, moist woodlands and along streamsides.
Veerys feed mainly on insects and fruit.
This is a northern species of bird; veerys can be found in all the Northern states. They are also found down throughout the Appalachian Mountains.
This is a night migrating bird. They are very secretive. Flocks are able to stay together in the dark by using a series of “contact calls” that allow them to identify were the fellow members are located.
Other thrushes (i.e. wood, gray-cheecked, Bicknell’s, Swainson’s, and hermit thrush).
