Description

The red-eyed vireo has an olive back and darker tail and wings. They are white underneath. The have red eyes (hence the name) and have no wing bars. They have a blue-gray crown. Red-eyed vireos have a white eyebrow bordered on both sides with black trim. It is sparrow sized.

The red-eyed vireo’s song is a series of short phrases: “Here I am; where are you?

Habitat

Red-eyed vireos are found in woodlands, broad-leaved forests, and residential areas.

Diet

They eat mainly insects.

Range

This bird can be throughout the United States, with the exception of the Southwest. There are also found in Canada.

Other Useful Information

They are a fierce fighter. Red-eyed vireos have no problem battling much larger birds then themselves, such as the pileated woodpecker.

Similar Species

Black-whiskered vireo, warbling vireo, and Philadelphia vireo.
