Description

The osprey has a large wing span (up to 6 ft.). It is brownish black above and black and white underneath. The head is mostly white, similar to that of a bald eagle, but has a broad black patch through the eye. Has a black “wrist” patch from underneath when in flight. This is one of the largest birds of prey in North America and the most widespread falcon in the world.

Voice

A series of sharp, strained whistles cheep, cheep or yewk, yewk.

Breeding

The breeding season starts in March. Eggs are usually laid in late April

Habitat

You will find these near rivers, lakes, and coasts.

Diet

Fish make up approximately 99% of the osprey’s diet.

Range

Ospreys can be found throughout the entire North American continent.

Other Useful Information

This is the only North American raptor that will plunge into the water.
