A Short Description of North Springfield Lake

North Springfield Lake and Stoughton Pond Recreation Area are developed for multiple use. Located on 1,372 acres of public lands along the Black River and the North Branch, these areas offer a variety of settings.

To North Springfield Lake from Springfield: Take Route 106 North 3 miles to Reservoir Road, go right 1 mile, the dam and lake are on the left.


Background

This project is part of the system of reservoirs and local protection works for the control of floodwaters in the Connecticut River Basin. The dam is operated to help protect downstream areas in Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut from flood damage. The dam was completed in 1960 at a cost of $7 million and has thus far prevented $57.3 million in flood damages. The record flood occurred April 1987 with the reservoir at 82% full.
