Description

This is a large, black bird with a long neck, a thin, hooked bill and a yellow face. In breeding season, it has fluffy black "eyebrows" or crests.

Habitat

You can find double-crested cormorants on ponds, lakes, rivers, or the open ocean. Basically it likes to be on open water.

Diet

These diving birds like fish.

Range

Double-crested cormorants live in the Midwest and Canada during the summer and on the North American coast year-round. You can only find them in VT and NH when they migrate.

Other Useful Information

These birds can form large flocks and they roost in trees and on rocks at the edge of water.

Similar Species

These cormorants look a lot like the neotropic and great cormorants, but those species do not come to VT and NH.
