Programs


Park Rangers at Northfield Brook Lake can conduct group programs upon request. Park Rangers can prepare for you programs on topics like the Water Cycle, The History of the Corps of Engineers, Dam Tours, and Nature Walks that focus on identifying specific water or natural resources. Rangers can also prepare a program that deals with the Corps of Engineers and its missions, Career as a Ranger and much more. These programs can be tailored to your needs. If you would like more information on any of these programs or to schedule a program please contact the Park Rangers.


2011 Program Schedule


Northfield Brook Lake offers a variety of educational and recreational programs in the summer months. The programs are generally scheduled for Saturday or Sunday. These family-oriented activities range from safety programs on Water Safety to Flood Control discussions where you learn about the Corps of Engineers, its history, and take a tour of the dam. You can take a guided Nature Walk where you learn about the local wildlife, plant-life, and much more about our natural resources. Programs are open to the public. All ages are welcome; however, we do ask adults to accompany their children.


Saturday, July 30th: History of Northfield Dam. Ever wonder why and how the dam was built? Please join us to find out. Location: Northfield Brook Lake Beach, Rt 254 Northfield, CT.


Sunday, August 7th: Water Extravaganza! Come have fun and learn about water safety with Park Rangers. Enjoy fun in the sun with life jacket races and water games, all while learning about water safety. Meet us at the water safety trailer. Prizes will be awarded.

Saturday, August 13th: Discover the Outside World: Meet Freddie the fish and learn about water quality with Park Rangers of the US Army Corps of Engineers! Stop by the brook and see what you can find underneath the water and how our action impact water quality.
Location: Northfield Brook Lake streamside, Rt 254 Northfield, CT. Meet near the white park ranger truck.
Time: 1:30pm


Saturday, August 14th: Discover the Coordinates to Outdoor Adventure; Geocaching, a Modern Day Treasure Hunt! Discover the fun of geocaching in our parks, learn about GPS and locate a geocache with Park Rangers!
Location: Northfield Brook Lake upper parking lot, Rt. 254, Northfield CT.

Sunday, August 21st: Something Fishy is Going on Here! Come learn to fish with Army Corps of Engineers Park Rangers!

All ages welcome. Bring your fishing gear if you have it!


Saturday, September 17th: Reptiles and Amphibians Will Touch Your Hearts… But First Will Touch Your Hands! Come discover the snakes, salamanders, frogs and turtles of Connecticut with Park Rangers from the Army Corps of Engineers! Live animals will be displayed.

Sunday, September 18th: Invasive Species: Are there Aliens in Your Backyard? Learn to identify non-native plants in your yard and how you can help eliminate them to maintain biodiversity!

Sunday, September 18th: Hiking, A True American Past Time. Join Park Rangers for an enlightening program on safe hiking and backpacking!

Sunday, September 25th: National Public Lands Day Event! Please join us to work on our butterfly garden for the fall and remove nearby invasive species! Volunteers wanted! Please register for this event. A volunteer agreement must be signed in order to participate. Children must be accompanied by adults.
Location: Black Rock Lake Basin, RT 109, Thomaston, CT. Follow signs to event.
Time: 10am


To get to Northfield Brook Lake....

Northfield Lake is located in Thomaston, Connecticut, easily accessible from Route 8. Take Route 8 North to exit 38, take a left on South Main Street, at the third traffic light take a left onto Route 254, 2 miles north.

From Route 8 South Take exit 38, take a right on South Main, next traffic light take a left onto Route 254, 2 miles north.
