Littleville Lake is located on the Middle Branch of the Westfield River in Huntington, Massachusetts, and is a part of a network of flood damage reduction dams on tributaries of the Connecticut River. Historic aerial photo of the flooded Big E fairgrounds

The Reservoir Regulation Team (RRT), is the "nerve center" for the New England flood damage reduction dams such as Littleville Lake. Using radio and satellite communications, RRT constantly monitors river levels and weather conditions that influence flood damage reduction decisions.

Corps personnel, in conjunction with RRT, regulate the amount of water released downstream by raising or lowering the two 4' x 8' gates located in the gatehouse at the dam. In a time of high water, the gates are lowered in order to hold back the water, only to be released when downstream river conditions begin to recede.

Littleville Dam is operated in close coordination with nearby Knightville Dam which is located on the East Branch of the Westfield River. Together, these two dams reduce flooding along the Westfield and Connecticut Rivers.

In the April of 1987, the combination of melting snow and heavy rains caused the flood waters to rise 53 feet behind the dam, filling Littleville Lake to 90% of its capacity. Littleville Dam prevented an estimated $11 millionion flood damage to downstream communites during this one storm event.
