Village Dam was built in 1959 at a cost of $4.4 million by the US
Army Corps of Engineers in response to the floods of 1936 which
caused tremendous property damage and took many lives in the Thames
River Basin. To date, it has prevented damages of more than $31.8
million. It is part of a system of six flood control dams designed
and built by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the basin. This system
controls flooding from Oxford, Massachusets, to Long Island Sound.
