For a fun and free family day outdoors, visit the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Midway Recreation Area. Located in a beautiful woodland area on the south side of the Cape Cod Canal, it is a quick and easy drive from both Route 28 and Route 6A.
This charming secluded recreation area features individual picnic sites with their own charcoal grills and parking areas, clean and comfortable restrooms, swings, volleyball, badminton and horseshoes, a spacious picnic pavilion with two large charcoal grills and a fireplace, and friendly Park Attendants on duty to assist you.

Not only is the Midway Recreation Area a beautiful, relaxing setting, but also the historic site of the Civilian Conservation Corps’ Camp 104 that helped to build Shawme Crowell State Forest and parts of present day Route 6A during the great Depression. If you have a large group looking for a place for a picnic or gathering, the rustically charming Midway Pavilion is available for free reservations, and can accommodate large groups as well as small.
