Swimming beach at Buffumville Lake in Charlton temporarily closed due to poor water quality

Published June 25, 2014

CONCORD, Mass. – The swimming beach at Buffumville Lake recreation area in Charlton, Mass., has been temporarily closed due to poor water quality, according to officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

Buffumville Lake beach has been closed to swimming for a week due to conditions that do not meet water quality standards. The lake is tested on a regular schedule during the recreation season and on June 19th Buffumville Lake was above the safe limit for Cynobacteria (blue-green algae), which is a toxin, so the beach was closed.

Buffumville Lake beach must pass a re-test before the park manager can reopen the beach. The earliest the Buffumville Lake beach could be re-opened for swimming will be July 3, 2014 and that is only if the water quality passes the re-test. It is not recommended that people or animals enter the water while Corps of Engineers officials wait for updated results of a re-test of the beach.
