Corps of Engineers awards contract for concrete repairs at Franklin Falls Dam service bridge in Franklin

Published Nov. 4, 2016

CONCORD, Mass. Concrete repairs to the Franklin Falls Dam service bridge in Franklin, New Hampshire, will be completed under the terms of a $149,630.00 contract recently awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District. Work will be accomplished by the contractor Atlantic Mechanical, Inc. of Woolwich, Maine. The contract was awarded on Aug. 16, 2016. Work on the 3-month long construction project has started and is anticipated to be completed during the first week of December 2016.

The work involves concrete repair to wingwalls at the approach bridge abutment, and repair to areas on the deck fascia below the railing posts. There are 34 of these areas varying in damage from cracks that require sealant to moderate concrete spalling requiring removal of loose concrete and repair. There are areas in need of repair on the intake tower corbels that support the bridge trusses.

Work requires repair of delaminated areas on the pier at the approach slab bearing points and repair of areas on the pedestals that support the bridge trusses. Work will include repair to areas of concrete spalling on the light fixture pedestals.

The project will be managed by the Corps and all work will be accomplished under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.

Construction of the dam was completed in October 1943 at a cost of $7.9 million. The 1,740-foot-long, 140-foot-high dam impounds a permanent pool of 440 acres with a maximum depth of about seven feet. The flood storage area of the project totals 2,800 acres and can store up to 50.2 billion gallons of water for flood risk management purposes.

The flood risk management project has prevented damages amounting to more than $178.3 million to date. More than 100,000 visitors annually enjoy the recreational facilities at Franklin Falls, including designated hiking and snowmobiling trails, picnicking, fishing, boating, wildlife viewing and hunting.
