Published Dec. 15, 2015

CONCORD, Mass. Maintenance painting of the Cape Cod Canal Vertical Lift Railroad Bridge in Buzzards Bay, Mass., will be completed under the terms of a $1,740,000 contract recently awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.  Work will be accomplished by Atlas Painting and Sheeting Corporation, of Amherst, N.Y. Painting is scheduled to start in the spring of 2016 with all worked scheduled for completion by Sept. 30, 2016.

Work consists of removing areas of flaking and peeling paint via hand tools with appropriate collection of debris created, and applying rust reforming coating on areas of repair. The contract was awarded on Sept. 30, 2015.

The bridge consists of a 544-foot vertical lift built-up riveted through truss span flanked by a single 128-foot built-up through truss tower span at each end. The steel structure is 806 feet long, center to center of abutment bearings, and carries a single track on an open timber tie deck across the Cape Cod Canal.

The Cape Cod Canal is an active marine navigation channel and will remain open during the painting project. The bridge is used regularly by rail traffic and will remain in operation during construction.

The painting project will be managed by the Corps under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.
