CONCORD, Mass. – Construction activities continue on Phase 1 of the $30.9 million Muddy River Flood Risk Management and Environmental Restoration project in Boston, Massachusetts. On Saturday, March 28, a portion of the Avenue Louis Pasteur roadway (bridge) will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic in order to install the piping beneath the roadway for the river diversion work. Vehicular traffic will be detoured to Boylston Street and Kilmarnock Street for those who want to be traveling on Park Drive in the vicinity of Peterborough Street and Queensberry Street (see attached plan for detour route and affected work area). Advanced signage will be in place for the detour. In order to avoid impact to vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow during a weekday, this detour is being implemented on a weekend when traffic is lighter. The expected duration of the detour is 1 day (Saturday, March 28) with the potential for a second day (Sunday, March 29) as required to finish up the work before the roadway can be opened up to permanent traffic.

Details concerning this weekend work are as follows:

  • Work to start on March 28
  • Hours will be from 7am to 4pm
  • Police detail will be provided for the duration of detour
  • Vehicular traffic inbound from Riverway – detouring of traffic to Boylston Street to Kilmarnock Street for those who want to be traveling on Park Drive
  • Vehicular traffic inbound from Fenway – detouring of traffic to opened portion of Avenue Louis Pasteur to Longwood Avenue to Brookline Avenue to Boylston Street to Kilmarnock Street for those who want to be traveling on Park Drive
  • Excavation of roadway; installation of 2-24” and 1-18” diameter piping; placement and compaction of backfill material; and paving of the roadway opening
  • Before the work is complete, the site will be restored overnight for vehicular traffic with steel plate or asphalt across the opening depending on timing and stage of the task

These activities are necessary in order to install the piping for the Muddy River diversion work which will allow our contractor to excavate and dispose of sediment of the Upper Fens Pond to construct the flood control channel; restore and protect the banks of the Upper Fens Pond; and daylight the river in the area near Avenue Louis Pasteur. We will do all we can to minimize impacts to the public during these activities.
