Corps awards $2.6 million contract for maintenance dredging at Wells Harbor federal navigation project; Work to start on or about Oct. 15

CONCORD, Mass. Maintenance dredging at the Wells Harbor federal navigation project in Wells, Maine, will be completed under the terms of a $2,680,908.00 contract recently awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

Work will be accomplished Southwind Construction Corporation, of Evansville, Ind. Construction is scheduled to start on or about Oct. 15, 2013 and take about 2 to 3 months to complete. The contract was awarded on Sept. 27, 2013.

“The work on this project consists of hydraulically dredging portions of the 8-foot entrance channel, the 6-foot inner harbor channel, the 8-foot settling basin between the jetties, and the 6-foot anchorage in the inner harbor,” said Project Manager Jack Karalius, of the Corps’ New England District, Programs & Project Management Division in Concord, Mass. “In addition, the two Town mooring areas in the inner harbor will be dredged. About 130,000 cubic yards of predominantly sandy sediment will be dredged by hydraulic cutterhead pipeline dredge.”

For disposal, the dredged sand will be used as beach renourishment and will be pumped about one mile south to Wells Beach and one mile north to Drakes Island Beach.

The project will be managed by the Corps and all work will be accomplished under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.
