USACE announces October closure dates for South Service Road near Sandwich Recreation Center

USACE, New England District
Published Oct. 7, 2022

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District announced today that a portion of the South Service Road next to the Sandwich Recreation Center on the Cape Cod Canal will be closed Oct. 12 and 13, and Oct. 18 and 19, to allow Canal Generating Plant to replace two failing pedestrian bridges.

Canal Generating Plant, which abuts the recreation center, will close off the service road to vehicle and pedestrian traffic so workers can replace the two plant-owned bridges that span the facility’s cooling canals. The west bridge area will be closed Oct. 12 and 13, and the east bridge area will be closed Oct. 18 and 19. Chain link fencing will be set up around the work zone and flaggers will be on site during crane operations to remove the old bridges and position the new ones. The public is being asked to give this work zone a wide berth for everyone’s safety.

The USACE Sandwich Recreation Center, parking lot and comfort station will remain open during construction work on the South Service Road.
